3 Biggest Hashtag Myths Debunked
There’s a lot of confusion around this one little word. What are they and how the heck do they even work? Before I started out as an entrepreneur, all I knew is that if I wrote #love or #beautiful on a photo, I would get random likes from people I didn’t know. I knew of hashtags, but I never really understood how they could be beneficial for a business. That is until I started my own biz and had to dig a little deeper and figure out how I could use them to my advantage.
Marketing doesn’t have to be super expensive. Sure, ads are great! But, I can tell you first hand that i’ve built my business by showing up on social media AND using some pretty kickass hashtags.
But Allyese, what are hashtags? (I’m glad you asked 😃)
Hashtag Official Definition: A word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic.
In other words, when you add a hashtag to your post, it’s indexed by the social network and becomes searchable/discoverable by other users on the platform.
When I speak to most of my clients about how they use hashtags they usually say, “I use the hashtags that have a higher number of posts.” or “I use the same hashtags on every post.” I told them how hashtags really work and debunked some myths, and now I’m going to share with you! It’s time to up your engagement and get you some organic leads.
MYTH #1 - THE HIGHER NUMBER OF POSTS UNDER HASHTAG THE BIGGER REACH YOU WILL HAVE
I am guilty of this one. I thought if a hashtag that had 1.5 Billion posts under it then I would get more views. Right?! WRONG.
On Instagram, this number is only showing how many times the hashtag has been used, NOT your potential reach. You will not reach 1.4 Billion people! In fact, using a hashtag with this many uses will BURY your photo into a sea of posts. If you think I’m lying, post a photo with #love, wait 10 seconds, and refresh. Your post will disappear into the Instagram black hole.
Try to aim for a hashtag sweet spot, between 10k - 500k uses.
MYTH 2 - YOU CAN ADD HASHTAGS ON AN OLD POST ANYTIME
Hashtags are time stamped based on when the photo was posted. No matter when you add a hashtag to your photo or video, it will appear in that hashtag feed with other photos and videos posted at its original posting time.
MYTH 3 - ONLY “DIRTY” HASHTAGS ARE BANNED
Did you know there are well over 100,000 banned hashtags?
A lot of people assume that dirty words like #boobs are banned on Instagram. They are absolutely correct but did you know that hashtags like #beautyblogger and #easter are banned as well.
It’s important to double and triple check your hashtags regularly because one banned hashtag can ruin the other 29.
There are a lot of rules and myth’s surrounding hashtags but if you do your research they can work in your favor and bring in followers who are genuinely interested in what you have to say and offer.
